Give me a standard. Give me the learners. I’ll turn it into an engaging instructional experience - in Spanish or English. Or both.

Case Study 3

Digital Journal Design

Project

Mi cuaderno digital de la Revolución de Texas

Audience

Middle school Texas History | Spanish-speaking & bilingual learners

Format

Interactive digital journal

Focus

Biliteracy, historical inquiry, multimedia learning, student-centered learning

Tools

PowerPoint, multimedia resources, hyperlinks, collaborative digital workspace

Design Challenge

Create an engaging digital learning experience that could guide Spanish-speaking students through a complex historical sequence while integrating content learning, literacy development, collaboration, and independent exploration.

Solution

I designed an interactive multimedia digital journal that functioned as both an instructional pathway and a student-created record of learning. Rather than simply consuming a textbook chapter, students actively built their understanding of the Texas Revolution through reading, discussion, research, multimedia, writing, and collaborative digital work.

Design Approach

I designed a multimedia digital journal that transformed a traditional history unit into a student-centered learning experience. Students moved through a sequenced collection of readings, videos, images, music, research tasks, vocabulary activities, written responses, and timeline development while collaborating within a shared digital workspace.

Rather than relying on a single instructional format, the journal varied the way students encountered and processed information. Activities incorporated contextual vocabulary development, summarization, historical analysis, visual research, multimedia exploration, and collaborative inquiry.

Key Design Features

  • Interactive, student-facing digital learning environment

  • Spanish-language content and directions

  • Collaborative learning within a shared digital workspace

  • Multimedia integration: video, music, images, readings, and linked resources

  • Embedded literacy and vocabulary scaffolds

  • Frequent shifts in task type and modality

  • Student research and independent information gathering

  • Chronological knowledge-building through an evolving timeline

  • Opportunities for written synthesis and historical interpretation

Student Research & Digital Exploration

Students independently gather information from linked digital resources and use their findings to construct understanding within the journal. Activities move students beyond consuming information to searching, selecting, interpreting, and documenting what they learn.

Historical Thinking & Multiple Perspectives

Students examine the Texas Revolution through competing historical perspectives, including Mexican and Texan viewpoints, and synthesize information through written responses rather than simply recalling facts.

Student-Created Digital Record of Learning

Rather than completing isolated worksheets, students build an evolving digital journal containing their research, written responses, vocabulary development, historical analysis, multimedia exploration, and interpretation of events.
